Fylde MP Andrew Snowden and County Councillor Tim Ashton have met with Councillor Karen Buckley, Leader of Fylde Council, to formally present a petition supported by over 600 residents calling for urgent action to prevent the unnecessary removal of mature trees on Clifton Street, Lytham.
The petition, launched by Cllr Ashton, has received strong public backing. It calls for a sensible, balanced approach to tree management, one that prioritises pruning and proper maintenance over wholesale removal. The trees in question have lined Clifton Street for decades, adding character to the town, offering shade and greenery, and playing a vital environmental role. However, in recent years, the roots have damaged the pavements, leading to a significant number of accidents.
County Councillor Tim Ashton said:
“Thank you to everyone who has supported our campaign. I’ve lived in Lytham all my life, these trees are part of our heritage and our history. That’s why I’m doing everything I can to save them.”
Andrew Snowden MP added:
“This isn’t just about saving a few trees, it’s about protecting what makes Lytham special. The community has spoken. They want to see these trees preserved wherever possible, and that’s a perfectly reasonable expectation.”
Councillor Karen Buckley said:
“I understand how important this issue is, and I can assure residents that the council is exploring possibilities to save the trees which is why we commissioned an inspection of the roots having first obtained expert advice. I’m clear that we are seeking a solution that enhances Lytham’s high street whilst keeping shoppers safe.”
The petition reflects the views of hundreds of residents who understand that some management may be necessary but believe removal should be a last resort. The message from Lytham is simple: protect our trees and preserve the character of our town.
